Soundscape in the Garden Series

Soundscapes in the Garden poster Image: Neue Nationalgalerie

During the last week of August 2025, the music series Soundscapes in the Garden at Neue Nationalgalerie will feature three evenings of ambitious, site-specific live concerts by five internationally admired and respected musicians, in collaboration with Tessa Nijdam and CTM Festival.

The series introduces a new dimension to the music programming that Neue Nationalgalerie has presented in and around its iconic sculpture garden since its early years – beginning with the »Jazz in the Garden« showcases in the 1970s and 1980s, which featured greats like Alice Contrane and Keith Jarrett, and continuing since the museum's reopening in 2022.

The spatiality and site-specificity of all live concerts is based on an immersive d&b Soundscape audio system, which will be specially installed in the garden for the duration of the series.

Below is a day-by-day overview of what's to come.

Day 1: Loraine James live | Blackhaine live

Wed 27 Aug 2025 | 18:30
Neue Nationalgalerie

Blackhaine is a British contemporary artist whose radical approach to drill, noise, and performance extends into choreography and immersive audiovisual installation. Grounded in the political and cultural realities of Northern England and influenced by the theatre of cruelty, Blackhaine’s physically intense performances explore a hybrid dramaturgy of voice, movement, and scenography.

Loraine James is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary experimental music. Raised on North London’s Alma Estate, she absorbed the musical diversity around her: emo, math rock, R&B, drill, IDM, and everything in between – often via her mum’s record collection of calypso and heavy metal. Her live performances unfold as layered, emotionally rich encounters – moving between fragmented melodies, rhythmic complexity, and an ever-shifting sense of time.

Day 2: Hania Rani presents “Chilling Bambino” live

Neue Nationalgalerie

Hania Rani is a musical nonconformist: pianist, composer, and vocalist, she blends classical, jazz, and electronic influences into a sound that is deeply personal and hypnotically immersive.

With Chilling Bambino, her electronic alter ego, she takes the listener on a darker journey through pulsating rhythms and textured soundscapes shaped by her signature Prophet synth. Rani’s performance in the sculpture garden invites audiences into new sonic territories, beyond genres, beyond convention.

Day 3: Limpe Fuchs live | Pantha du Prince live

For over a decade, Pantha du Prince (Hendrik Weber) has explored the interconnection between humans and nature. With »Garden Gaia,« he continues this journey through an electroacoustic album shaped by empathy, attentiveness, and cyclical growth. Weber blends fragile textures, analog synths, and strings into a sonic landscape suspended between dream and reality. Each of the album’s nine tracks captures a moment—musical dialogues with collaborators around the globe.

Legendary improviser Limpe Fuchs explores sound through voice, violin, percussion, and other custom-made instruments, as well as installations. Fuchs forged her own path in the turbulent, transformative countercultural scene of 1960s Munich. By the decade's end, she founded Anima-Sound, a banner for her research that would continue for 20 years in tandem with her partner, sculptor Paul Fuchs. Her performance practice is largely situational and improvisational, determined by the acoustics of the space in which she performs as well as the input of any collaborators involved. In addition to vocals and traditional instruments, Fuchs makes use of materials such as wood, granite, and bronze, elevating their individual resonances to a distinct focal point.
