Cinna Peyghamy is a delver into the affinities of sound. At the centre of the French-Iranian composer’s practice squats the Persian tombak drum; entwined with and perpetually transformed by its presence hums an elaborate constellation of oscillators, resonators, control voltages, and signal pathways through which each strike may acquire an unforeseen afterlife. Peyghamy’s fascination lies in the reciprocal metamorphosis of these ostensibly disparate instruments. He constructs bespoke sonic apparatuses and devises intricate relationships between performer and instrument, muscular immediacy and microscopic intricacy advancing with bodily conviction while its timbres proliferate into abstruse geometries.

Showcasing her new album Ruin: It’s Not Just Music in a special multi-channel spatial format, the harmonic expanses and intricate melodic ecologies of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s earlier work remain, but beneath them now breakbeats and drum-and-bass patterns splinter through a dense strata of synthesis. Released via her co-founded label Someone Special, at the heart of the record combustion and reconstruction copulate and consume each other endlessly, a necessary release of accumulated tension through which one world might be broken open so that another may emerge glistening.

Yoinking from Durban gqom, São Paulo baile funk, Baltimore club and British bass,  Zimbabwe-born producer State OFFF juggles their cavernous low frequencies and abrupt rhythmic dislocations, flipped to compel unfamiliar movement. His DJ sets extend this predilection, juxtapositions of African diasporal aurals and its international interlocutors with a discerning ear that makes geographical distance an inconsequential impediment to rhythmic affinity.

Nadia Struiwigh carries in her a dancefloor eloquence built of subterranean techno and the protean vocabularies of jungle and drum and bass, peppered with the most exploratory of IDM. Born in Rotterdam and now based in Berlin, Struiwigh finds inspiration in vintage synthesizers and antiquated grooveboxes, the alchemy of the modular within spontaneous studio experimentation. A mist-enveloped introspection half-shrouds formidable rhythmic propulsion, the delicate phosphorescence of nocturnal metropoli rising from a dream swiftly fading.
