The experimental project of Italian artist and DJ Tullia Benedicta, NZIRIA takes Neapolitan neomelodic songs into the pressure chamber of hardcore, the rich melodrama of Southern Italian pop music fragmented through punishing beats. The voice sits at the center of the project, powerful and theatrical, carrying the exaggerated emotional intensity of neomelodico into a world of pounding percussion. Tarantella and tammurriata rhythms reconnect the project with folk traditions, given a new velocity and physical charge. The genre’s traditional narratives open toward queer identity and gender fluidity.
