Following their residency at Somerset House Studios in collaboration with CTM and Goethe-Institut London, Hanne Lippard and Renato Grieco present the live performance of their new album Today's Special, released in October ‘26 on Shelter Press. Lippard’s sonic wordplay entwines with Grieco’s viola da gamba and piano, applying methods of reduction to meticulously peg the poetic to the musical. Through systems of harmonic correspondences and measured repetition, a repertoire in which language becomes a score and musical gesture a form of acoustic typography is constructed. Anecdotes, nursery-rhyme structures, borrowed utterances and absurd monologues are subjected to precise arrangements, meanings multiplied as each word and sound strains to justify its presence.
Trained and rooted in both operatic technique and experimental performance, Mozambican mezzo-soprano Mariana Carrilho’s voice carries ancestral weight. Following a mentorship with Heinali supported by Forecast Platform, Carrilho will premiere »Flor Do Ibo,« a new work centred on the female voice as a site of continuity and resistance. The piece is anchored in Ibo Island, home to the Mwani people, from whom Carrilho descends. The title refers to a small grocery shop of the same name run by Carrilho’s family during the Portuguese colonial occupation. The shop stood between the Black and European neighbourhoods in a space shaped by daily negotiations. Combining field recordings, voice, and instrumental music, Carrilho builds the traditional and the contemporary into a song cycle, in which the shop becomes a metaphor on what it means It is both a tribute to the women of Mwani and a testament to their daily struggle for survival since the outbreak of the conflict in Cabo Delgado, which has displaced families and torn communities and traditions apart since 2017.
