AKA HMOT, the Siberian-born Basel-based artist and researcher sifts through the fractured pieces left by colonisation and forced assimilation. He believes inherited memory can be recovered and reconfigured. The quray, a traditional Bashqort flute, is a particularly potent instrument in this process; its breathy tones pass through electronic processing and spatial manipulation until its ancient musical soul begins to flicker. Field recordings, modular systems, improvisation and computer-generated sound become tools for examining how Indigenous traditions survive, grow and acquire new meanings under colonial pressure.
