Rully Shabara

Yogyakarta-based vocalist and composer Rully Shabara has spent two decades pushing his voice into uneasy territories: through throat singing, guttural resonance, shrieks, whispers, breath, and rapidly shifting vocal textures, each sound carries its own weight. Improvisation is central to his method, the voice turned endlessly into an expandable instrument through repetition and direct contact with the surrounding space. As the vocalist of Senyawa, Shabara developed this language alongside Wukir Suryadi’s handmade instruments, resulting in an intensely physical strain of Indonesian experimental music rooted in Javanese musical traditions and folk practices as much as punk and free improvisation. Shabara has also developed his own vocal methodologies through Raung Jagat and Gaung Jagat, using collective vocal exploration as a way of connecting bodies as well as inherited cultural knowledge.
