After more than a decade of collaboration between CTM Festival and Germany’s public radio Deutschlandfunk Kultur, with support from Austria’s ORF public radio, the Radio Lab is shifted into a project titled »In Listening« which aims to zero in on sound-focused experiences.
Brazilian artist and researcher Pedro Oliveira asks »What would AI have been like if it had been invented in Lee ›Scratch‹ Perry’s studio?« His project »The Devil Can’t Copy« is a para-genealogical account of artificial intelligence imagining the genesis of contemporary machine listening at reggae and dub studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Taking inspiration from the mythology surrounding Lee »Scratch« Perry's studio The Black Ark, this work explores the Black Box’s archetype dubwise: while both are shrouded in mystery of its inner workings and functioning logics, the Ark is a psychedelic, intuitive, and fantastic experiment, while the Box is hermetic, finished, and enclosed in itself. The goal of this work is to inhabit this suspended moment in history and to iterate on it, questioning what forms of intelligence are possible beyond extraction, synthesis and resolution, positioning itself towards poetics and hallucination as a generative creative force.

Artist and researcher Zara Julius will be collaborating with South African musicians Larissa Johnson and Gugulethu Duma, to ask how we might approach breathing, listening, and sounding as embodied and political practice. In »Spectral (After Pneuma),« breath is made to wander between the Xhosa musical bows umrhubhe and uhadi and the human voice, using the body as a resonator through which breath, vibration, and timbre are shaped. Its point of departure is a spatial composition fashioned from six recorded voices of circular breath, subjected to a new order of relations.
This work forms part of Julius, and Johnson's broader research into indigenous Southern African instruments as compositional systems in their own right, exploring their particular sonic logics. It invites an openness to be moved by vibrational charge and its resultant temporal distress, exploring the collective potential in resonating together.
