Free forms of experimental and electronic music with roots in musical subcultures such as techno, industrial, drone, noise, metal, and neoclassical, have increasingly attracted the interest of the film industry over the last decade, and continue leaving a lasting impact. The panel aims to discuss independent experimental music scenes – spaces for sonic experimentation, collaboration, and adventurous production – as springboards into the film industry.

While much attention is given to film industry figures, voices from experimental artists who are creating these soundtracks are often less heard. What are some of the stories from this experimental scene, the catalyst communities and localities that created the necessary room to experiment? What are the highs and lows, the tensions of straddling an artistic role that can range from being an auteur to executing a director's ideas? What is it about these experimental music scenes that enables these artists and creative/cultural workers to nurture their talents? What new sonic approaches are experimental artists bringing into film?

Given the obvious value of experimental grassroots aesthetics as a source of renewal for mainstream creative industry, should the film industry not develop models to actively support the fragile and mostly precarious experimental music scene?
