Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche25 / 20 €Conceived by Serge Tcherepnin some half-century ago, the Serge Modular analog systems present no fixed allegiance to established laws of musical tonality. One of the most powerful and revered instruments of the pre-digital era, Thomas Ankersmit has devoted two decades to the exploration of these instruments to discern how the history of an instrument may be apprehended through the sounds it yields. From this inquiry emerges »The Tcherepnin Series,« a succession of sonic portraits each fashioned in response to the dispositions of a particular system. Proceeding from the conviction that the Serge Modular’s full potential has yet to be realized—and that analog synthesis can be pushed beyond its familiar clichés—the living action of Ankersmit’s own Serge system is joined to material developed upon these massive mothership machines surviving within historic studios worldwide, each system unique and designed for different composers. An environment of tangible depth is suggested only to dissolve into minute fluctuations, unsettling the customary sense of distance and dimension and bringing these otherwise isolated systems into dialogue for the first time.
The intricate A/V frameworks of Genoël von Lilienstern dismantle the traditional dynamics of concerts. Performed together with classical chaoticists Zafraan Ensemble, his work »Terroir« creates a zoom-in effect on acoustic instruments between doomdrone gristle and delicate microtonal shimmers. »Terroir« takes its title from the concept of specific qualities of a place: the characteristics of the instruments, the bodies producing them, the room in which they’re performed and the systems processing their signals all become part of a particular aural ecology. Based on the 16-EDO tuning system, the work creates musical progressions enhanced and pitch-shifted down towards the earth’s soil, to blossom the unexpected and unusual within the ear.
