Thomas Ankersmit

Music

Opening the ear to marvels concealed beneath conscious attention.

Amidst the innermost provinces of electricity delves Thomas Ankersmit, there to coax forth its unimagined harmonies, its prodigious tumult and most fugitive of audible delicacies. Working principally with the Serge modular synthesizer, the Dutch producer begins with a mere filament of sound, almost evanescent, before unfurling it into vast concatenations of spectral tone and colour. Pitches multiply, harmonics blooming from empty space. A psychonaut of the psychoacoustic, his investigations into the peculiarities of hearing touch upon otoacoustic emissions: the faint sounds generated by the inner ear and the disorienting physical sensations of infrasonic vibration. His performances are proof-of-concept demonstrations of the imagination's power to transform technology into revelation, opening the ear to marvels concealed beneath conscious attention. Each overtone seems to disclose yet another chamber within the music's heaving aural architecture, a compelling invitation to experience listening as an act of discovery.
