Anarchic spaces breed active listening.

The Sound Practice Research (SPR) group comprises students from various disciplines at the Folkwang University of the Arts. Led by Jan St. Werner and Michael Akstaller, SPR have teamed up with CTM Festival and the Futures of Listening initiative to create an artistic lab that invites international artists to engage in four days of theoretical discussion and practical experimentation around spatial sound.

The lab’s finale, this collective performance and presentation by the lab’s fellows and hosts is the culmination of recording and experimentation field trips to various Berlin locations, listening and mixing sessions, collaborative listening exercises and exchange sessions between participants and international researchers, via a broad spectrum of technology and methodologies - from DIY equipment to anarchic methods - to look at the ways space can become an active element of musical composition.

The two-year Master’s programme Sound Practice Research at Folkwang University of the Arts offers an interdisciplinary exploration of sound and music, combining theoretical inquiry with practical and artistic experimentation. Led by artist and musician Jan St. Werner and supported by an international team of faculty members and guest contributors, the programme integrates music, performance, artistic research, cultural studies, media production, musicology, art, architecture and methodologies of multiperspectival and experimental contemporary composition.

Futures of Listening is a Netherlands based platform supporting emerging developments in spatial sound, immersive experiences, performance, and installation art. Founded by FIBER Festival, 4DSOUND, Robin Koek, and Art of Sound at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, the initiative connects artists with a broad network of artistic, scientific, and cultural partners, including CTM.

A collaboration between CTM Festival, Sound Practice Research / Folkwang University of the Arts, and Futures of Listening. Futures of Listening is funded by the CIIIC – Creative Industries Immersive Impact Coalition and the Creative Industries Fund NL. With further contributions from the Sound Studies programme at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK).
