Javier Areal Vélez’s unconventional approach works in the spirit of estrangement. The composer, improviser, and cultural organiser's recent solo work focuses on the development of live electronic music based on the superposition of (de)generative (poly)rhythms, exploring human–machine collaborations through the use of samples, synthesis, lighting and robots. In parallel, he has a long career as a performer of prepared electric guitar, with a distinctive style based on primal techniques that emphasise timbre and rhythm, prioritising intensity and dynamic contrast over traditional forms. He's lived and worked in Berlin since 2026 as a resident of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.
