Oliveira’s project »The Devil Can’t Copy« is a para-genealogical account of artificial intelligence imagining the genesis of contemporary machine listening at reggae and dub studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Taking inspiration from the mythology surrounding Lee »Scratch« Perry's studio The Black Ark, this work explores the paradigm of the Black Box dubwise: while both are shrouded in mystery of its inner workings and functioning logics, the Ark is a psychedelic, intuitive, and fantastic experiment, while the Box is hermetic, finished, and enclosed in itself. The goal of this work is to inhabit this suspended moment in history and to iterate on it, questioning what forms of intelligence are possible beyond extraction, synthesis and resolution and positioning itself towards poetics and hallucination as a generative creative force.
