In »Spectral (After Pneuma),« breath is made to wander between the Xhosa musical bows umrhubhe and uhadi and the human voice, using the body as a resonator through which breath, vibration, and timbre are shaped. Its point of departure is a spatial composition fashioned from six recorded voices of circular breath, subjected to a new order of relations. This work forms part of Julius and Johnson's broader research into indigenous Southern African instruments as compositional systems in their own right, exploring their particular sonic logics.

In Listening is a project by Deutschlandfunk Kultur – Hörspiel / Klangkunst and CTM Festival, in collaboration with ORF Ö1 Blaue Stunde and ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst.
