Workshop two takes place as an illustrated survey that traces the evolution of spatial audio across six decades, moving from early tape diffusion practices to Ambisonics, Wave Field Synthesis, and modern object-based systems. Key historical works are analysed to map their specific aesthetics against the technical affordances and constraints of their eras. By distinguishing between channel-based, scene-based, and object-based paradigms, participants gain a solid technical and historical orientation within multichannel practice.
The workshop will focus on tape diffusion, Ambisonics, WFS, object‑based systems, by providing an illustrated survey of works across six decades; aesthetics framed by affordances. Participants will leave with an orientation within approaches and their technical logics.
Learning objectives:
- Situate Ambisonics and WFS within multichannel histories.
- Distinguish channel‑based, scene‑based, object‑based paradigms.
- Map aesthetics to constraints and opportunities.
