Even Hell Has Its Heroes traces the story of Earth, the Pacific Northwest band whose glacial pace and low frequencies helped conjure a new subgenre of sound while carving out an indelible influence on grunge, metal and experimental music culture. The film follows Earth’s leader Dylan Carlson and his cohorts through landscapes emotional and literal, capturing their devotion to drone and the personal struggles that have trailed them.
The stark beauty of the forests and rain-soaked cities that shaped their sound is featured prominently, the music at times seeming to emanate from their vast lungs, unfolding across a narrative arc threading through addiction, loss, and obsessive creativity. Cinematic itself in rhythm and tone, Earth's music forms a mystic metal language that surrounds every frame. The slowest tempos carry the heaviest truths.
