Since the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine in 2014, Nikita Kadan’s practice has been evolving into a distinct language that addresses a »prolonged urgency« — a state of catastrophe that has endured far longer than anticipated or possible. His work explores the paradoxical intersection of suffocation, pleasure, and radical clarity, as well as reflections on a shrinking demographic of male artists in draft age who live and work in Ukraine. In conversation with Ukraine-based curator Alona Karavai, this artist talk will navigate through Kadan’s recent body of work, from »Tryhova (The Sirens and the Mast)« and the »Hostomel« sculptures to the »Shchekavytsia« works, as well as the situational forest exhibitions featuring artists who cannot leave Ukraine.
