»Try to Turn the Wind« is an interactive sound sculpture using electronics, loudspeakers, and an anemometer. Softly diffused wind sounds are altered by the visitor’s breath blowing against the sensor, triggering sonic layers ranging from the sounds of coal mining, to political speeches and emergency sirens. The work stages an artificial yet tangible feedback loop between sound and air, evoking a small-scale climate simulation in which minor interventions can produce unstable and far-reaching effects. Originally created in 2021, Cathy Van Eck has now updated the work with new speech samples to reflect how political discourse around climate change has evolved – sometimes quite drastically – in only a few years.
Originally commissioned by iiii – instrument inventors initiative.
Presented with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Pro Helvetia.
