Resynthesising the Traditional

Thematic Strand 2025 – Present

Resynthesising the Traditional is a multi-year thematic strand, co-curated by Stas Shärifullá and CTM, that explores how musicians and sound artists can critically engage with (past) traditions and heritage. Evoking resynthesis—a processing method in computer music that analyzes sounds to extract their fundamental components—as a guiding metaphor, the thematic strand features performances, talks and an artistic lab that in various ways confront conservative views of culture as something frozen, solidified, and generally untouchable, thus resistant to any transformative practices.

The thematic strand will be explored through commissioned works, performances, artistic labs, talks, workshops, articles in CTM magazine, and more. Aside from activities hosted at CTM's annual Berlin festival, Resynthesising the Traditional will also connect with partners worldwide in various formats.
