1Opening CTM 2027, Polygonia and Simon Popp bring their shared polyrhythmic sensibilities together to build from their collaborative work »Apiformes«. Improvisation is their starting point: acoustic percussion and synthesised sounds entangle, momentum emerging from spontaneous decisions. Popp’s interlocking rhythms and Polygonia’s sequenced electronics evoke the natural world of patterns and collective signals, bringing it into realms no less beautiful for their unnaturalness.
Munich-based artist Polygonia composes with an ear for the patterns and correspondences within the natural world, pulling forth its aural allures into unusual configurations. Trained in acoustic instruments and drawn to the visual arts, she brings a finely wrought sense of detail in her intricate percussion and shifting, organic textures. Elements of techno, breakbeat, bass, ambient and IDM mingle within, bleeding into one another in breathy bursts.
Trained in jazz drumming and polyrhythm, Simon Popp draws on an extensive collection of instruments, from balafon and slit drums to singing bowls, bells and tuned metal percussion, each and all used as a means of telling stories. Intricate patterns of acoustic percussion melt into electronic processing, smoothing into ambient textures amongst minimalist repetition. At once earthy and weightless, his finely wrought structures leave room for chance and unexpected turns: experimentation is the flavour he favours, unfamiliar timbres welcomed to bring compositions into new realms.
