State OFFF
Music
When State OFFF makes a noise, it is a widely-traveled sound indeed. Yoinking from Durban gqom, São Paulo baile funk, Baltimore club and British bass, the Zimbabwe-born producer juggles their cavernous low frequencies and abrupt rhythmic dislocations, flipped to compel unfamiliar movement. His DJ sets extend this predilection, juxtapositions of African diasporal aurals and its international interlocutors with a discerning ear that makes geographical distance an inconsequential impediment to rhythmic affinity. Subjected to ceaseless reinvention, his work flows with the zeitgeist of an increasingly interconnected dance floor, maintaining a formidable rhythmic coherence amid its profusion of stylistic idioms and contrasting approaches to composition.
