Shamica Ruddock
Artistic Lab
Shamica Ruddock is a British artist-composer who uses fiction and folklore to explore how Black diasporic histories change and get passed on. Sound is a way of producing and preserving knowledge, particularly where official histories leave gaps or fail to account for lived experience. Her research into Maroon communities, formed by enslaved Africans who escaped colonial slavery and established independent communities across the Americas, informed her 2022 exhibition Deciphering a Broken Syntax, drawing on Black technopoetics and oral traditions. Alongside her solo work she collaborates with artist Hannan Jones on projects exploring memory and musical notation, including Strike | the mark feeds the score | surface as notation, which considers how the histories and cultural significance of percussion instruments can be translated into sculptural form.
