Paul Hauptmeier

Artistic Lab

Artistic experimentation and research join hands.

The compositions of composer and sound artist Paul Hauptmeier unfold through multichannel sound, live electronics, augmented reality and large-scale installations, turning the listener’s movement and position into part of the experience. Much of Hauptmeier’s work begins with listening as a physical act: sounds are captured from places, transformed through synthesis and then scattered through speaker systems to acquire their own trajectories through a room. Alongside Martin Recker, he forms the duo Hauptmeier | Recker, whose work stretches from electroacoustic composition and radiophonic pieces to opera, multimedia performance and site-specific installations. Their custom software LEMM allows sound to be manipulated and spatialised in real time, while projects such as Diaphanous Sound have extended these ideas into augmented reality. As a founding member of Leipzig’s ZiMMT, Hauptmeier has also helped develop a broader culture around spatial listening.
