Mariana Carrilho

Trained and rooted in both operatic technique and experimental performance, Mozambican mezzo-soprano Mariana Carrilho’s voice carries ancestral weight. Her current project Flor do Ibo turns toward Ibo Island and the Mwani community, gathering local testimonies and soundscapes into an evolving body of work concerned with ancestry, displacement, and the memory held inside place. The project is dedicated to the memory of her ancestors and to Mwani women affected by war and displacement since 2017, with the island’s colonial history providing another layer of tension.
