Klara Lewis
Music
Klara Lewis coaxes unfamiliar emotional contours from sounds whose origins remain tantalisingly discernible. The music of the Swedish composer inhabits an uncertain land upon the borders of electroacoustic composition and the oblique remnants of song where a fragment may be disassembled and reconstituted until its identity smears, becoming elusive and strangely affecting. Lewis has a well-trained sensitivity to the latent character of recorded material: the grain of a sound, its decay and accidental blemishes, and the minute discrepancies that emerge when subjected to digital deformation. These irregularities govern the music’s physiognomy, compositions subtly rearranging themselves beneath the listener’s attention. Out on Editions Mego, her new album »Opening« is rich in illuding feints and beguilements, built of discombobulatory processes which veil, unveil, collapse and reform in a flickering half-light.
