Kali Malone’s music has always possessed an otherworldliness born partly of scale and duration, a vast intimacy whose true spectacle occurs inwardly, in the chest, where sound may awaken quiet provinces of wonder and insight beyond ordinary speech. Each chord arrives with its own weight, hue and contour, as stones discovered along a winding path towards a concealed destination. The journey is neither hurried nor prescribed; it simply continues. Her new work Burning Song proceeds by intuition, moving through endings and beginnings, memory and anticipation, feeling itself the surest form of knowledge. Turning toward a more immediate and intuitive compositional process, these pieces allow another kind of architecture to emerge: one of gradual linearities, subtle bridging tones pass between them to bind one utterance to the next, allowed to unfold within its own time.
