‘Cultural detritus thrown into a furnace and melted together’ is how Kabeaushé makes pop music. Rap, electronics, baroque, gospel, disco, rock and cinematic soundtracks emerge in lurching new configurations, carried by vocals that glide from murmured speech into falsetto as aurals shimmer and erupt around them. Theatrical gestures and sudden shifts in scale open portals to fevered worlds with gleefully peculiar laws. Born in Nairobi and now based in Berlin, he is a chimera of another order: part singer, part actor, part apparition, a whirl of costume and character.
