Heinali

Operating extensively on a modular synthesizer, Ukrainian composer and sound artist Heinali designs complex generative software patches that allow him to construct polyphonic counterpoint and real-time improvisations inspired by the architecture of high medieval music. Early Western polyphony and monophony become reflective surfaces to examine contemporary state-sanctioned trauma. Rooted in the tension between systems of predetermined musical logic and the instability of live electronic processes, the modular patch acts as an autonomous structure to produce variations even within a tightly controlled framework. Medieval compositional techniques become a living framework for confronting the ruptures of the present.
