Anqi Liu

Artistic Lab

Attending to changes in language, land and everyday life as they enter the sounding body.

Born and raised in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia and currently based in Denver, multimedia artist and researcher Anqi Liu traces how sounds and ways of knowing endure through the encounters that transform them. Across acoustic composition, Mongolian choor khuur, modular synthesis, audiovisual ecology and interactive systems, she makes audible the effort of sustaining what resists stability. Through the Ecology of Fraysonics, she composes conditions that performers must continually inhabit and renegotiate, allowing the resistance of materials, the histories carried by bodies, and the work of listening together to shape musical form.

Her solo choor khuur album and companion essay book a grey city with its beast traces the distance between the life a sound carries and the terms on which it is recognised as art. Her forthcoming duo album Astral Sundering (New Focus Recordings, 2027) brings her modular synthesizer into free improvisation with Kyle Motl’s double bass. Liu performs with Han Zhang as āññā and collaborates with Zhang and Mingyong Cheng in A Happy Mennn, a research and performance collective. She holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from UC San Diego and is Assistant Professor and Music Production Program Lead at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Denver. There, she leads the development of the Rocky Mountain Sound Lab, an ambisonic spatial audio studio, and advances interdisciplinary approaches to sound education.
