A fragile space between design and emotion.

A British composer, sound designer, and producer based in Berlin, Slater’s meticulous merging of experimental electronics with modern composition and intricate sound design have earned him multiple Grammy Awards for his work as score producer and musical sound designer on Joker and Chernobyl, both with composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. In his own work he favours unconventional sound sources, crafting instruments from altered acoustics, field recordings and bespoke electro-acoustic devices, often teasing out hidden layers of sound using advanced recording techniques and custom rigs.

Co-founder of the ensemble Osmium with Guðnadóttir, Emptyset’s James Ginzburg, and Senyawa’s Rully Shabara, their powerful constellation explores ultra-heavy metallic sonics and extended vocal and percussive forms using custom-built instruments and electroacoustic setups, a bridge between industrial sound sculpture and contemporary classical. He’s released two solo records on Iceland's acclaimed Bedroom Community and produced, recorded, and mixed a multitude of records, including work from composers Colin Stetson, Ben Frost, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Yair Glotman, and Mica Levi. Most recently Slater launched Mt. Brings Death, a new label with guitarist Mason Lindahl aimed at experimental and cross-media projects.
