Mattin is an artist, musician, and theorist whose work engages conceptually with noise and improvisation. Through his practice, writing, and teaching, he investigates performative modes of estrangement as a response to structural alienation. He's also an associate professor at the Tromsø Academy of Arts at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.
He's presented exhibitions, performances, and workshops internationally, including at documenta14 (Athens and Kassel), Performa (NYC), the Shanghai Biennial, Arika (Glasgow), and Unsound (Krakow). He has also lectured and taught at institutions such as CalArts, Bard College, Paris VIII, Princeton University, DAI, and HDK-Valand. His book Social Dissonance was published by Urbanomic/MIT Press in 2022, and Unconstituted Praxis—a collection of his writings, interviews, and performance reviews—was released in 2012 by CAC Brétigny and Tuamaturgia (both titles are available online). Together with Anthony Iles, he co-edited Noise & Capitalism (Kritika/Arteleku, 2009) and Abolishing Capitalist Totality (Minor Compositions, 2026). In 2017, he earned a PhD at the University of the Basque Country under the supervision of philosopher Ray Brassier. Mattin performs in the groups Al Karpenter, Billy Bao, and Regler, and has issued over 100 releases across various international labels.
Since 2020, he has co-hosted the podcast Social Discipline with Miguel Prado. Prado and Mattin also collaborate in the Noise Research Union (NRU) alongside Cécile Malaspine, Sonia de Jager, Martina Raponi, Patricia Reed, and Inigo Wilkins.
