Growlers Choir is a cacophonic beast, howling in lurches that remain porous, so that beauty might ooze through in fragrant beads. Founded by composer Pierre-Luc Senécal in 2016, the choir is composed solely of metal vocalists, called »growlers,« coming from different metal subcultures. The compositions of the thirteen-piece ensemble split across low, mid, and high registers, combining wails, pig squeals, howls and shrieks with whispered breaths, ASMR textures and effects. The resulting entity metamorphoses between blackened metal pits into acappella compositions pulled gasping from hallowed places. One moment the mind is infused with electric feedback, machine-like drones, sweat-lapping beasts overlapping, then suddenly the air is hollowed by pure, unaccompanied choral harmonies. The ears shift constantly between tension and release.
