Dorothy Carlos is a cellist and composer working with improvisation, electronics, and spatial sound. Through extended cello techniques and digital manipulation, she develops performances that explore texture, and the physical presence of sound in space. With a BA in cello performance and anthropology from NYU and an MFA in sound from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her approach draws from experimental music and computer-based composition, using live processing to expand the instrument’s acoustic and emotional range.
Her work has been presented internationally at Experimental Sound Studio Chicago, Bemis Center, e-flux, CNMAT at UC Berkeley, Sustain-Release, the Chicago Jazz String Summit, and Big Ears Festival. Collaborative projects have appeared at the Swiss Institute, Night Gallery, Artists Space, Issue Project Room, Performance Space New York, Untitled Art Fair, Gaudeamus Festival, Emerging Change Festival, and the Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art. Performances and recordings have been featured in The Wire, The New York Times, Artforum, Bandcamp, Chicago Tribune, and The Quietus, with releases on 29 Speedway and D.O.T. Audio Arts.
