Known as a true legend in noise music, the native Norwegian has contributed to more than 300 releases and regularly branches out into various creative realms, from managing record labels and designing album covers to publishing journals and curating live shows. His collaborative spirit has led him to work with many key figures in extreme music, including Sunn O))) and Merzbow. His latest solo work Context, released on Smalltown Supersound, showcases a nuanced approach to sound, skillfully shifting between raw intensity and quieter, more contained passages.
Though rooted in noise, Marhaug’s projects hold no fealty to genre, frequently intersecting with jazz, rock, improvisation, and extreme metal in a distinctive fusion that defines his sound. Since the early 1990s, he’s released over 200 recordings across formats like CDs, vinyl, and cassettes, and his impact extends beyond music into film, theatre, dance, and visual installations. Now based in Oslo, Marhaug continues to push the boundaries of sound and performance, bringing his polymathic energy and inventive vision to both solo projects and collaborative ventures across a broad spectrum of aural experimentation.
