Ancient systems meet modern club dynamics.

Emerging from the bustling, raw energy of North Jakarta’s ghettos, Kasimyn thrives at the intersection of cultural roots and sonic futurism. A DJ, producer, and one half of Gabber Modus Operandi (GMO), his artistry has been celebrated as a mayhem of anti-aesthetic fun and featured in Boiler Room’s explorations of global rave culture. His solo and collaborative works traverse a hyper-kaleidoscopic range of influences, from gabber and grindcore to Indonesian jathilan trance rituals, forging new pathways between the traditional and the avant-garde in thrillingly unpredictable ways. GMO’s sound obliterates boundaries, fusing high-BPM chaos with distinctly Indonesian musical traditions like dangdut koplo and funkot, blasting out ecstatic cultural collisions, while his solo project Hulubalang explores speculative futures of Indonesian dance music.

Kasimyn’s fascination with distortion—not just as a sound but as a concept tied to postcolonial identity—has fueled his projects. Influenced by thinkers like Wendy Brown, he approaches distortion as a means to destroy something for the future. His work extends into deep research on Southeast Asia’s harmonic scales, pelog and slendro, blending these ancient systems with modern club dynamics. Whether spinning sets that traverse house, hip-hop, gabber, and ambient soundscapes or contributing to Björk’s Fossor, Kasimyn’s artistry is rooted in a vision of liberation: musically, politically, and spiritually.
