Through brutal noise, ghostly samples, and intricate polyrhythms, Hulubalang mourns the marginalized figures of history—nameless, voiceless individuals reduced to props in the colonizers' narratives. It is a sound both a cathartic and sorrowful tribute, echoing the shattered innocence of disrupted rituals and the pain of unacknowledged sacrifices.
The solo venture of Kasimyn—one-half of Gabber Modus Operandi and hard-hitting producer, DJ, and label owner—Hulubalang delves into a more conceptual, narrative-driven realm, as showcased in his debut album Bunyi Bunyi Tumbal on Drowned by Locals. Translating to "Synthetic Feeling for Anonymous Sacrifice," the album reflects on Indonesian war archives, including colonial-era photographs captured by Dutch rulers. In all his projects, Kasimyn’s work remains rooted in innovation, cultural reflection, and a profound engagement with music’s capacity to connect past, present, and speculative futures.
