Imagining alternative timelines of global dance music where Arab and African sounds lead the genre’s evolution.

Deena Abdelwahed’s productions are layered with shape-shifting basslines and metallic edges of electronic drum programming, designed for the dancefloor but writhing with complexity and depth. A product of Tunisia’s vibrant alternative music scene, she cut her teeth as part of the Arabstazy collective before relocating to France at 26. Since then, she has emerged as a leading figure in contemporary Arabic electronic music, infusing the genre with her distinctive influences ranging from the propulsive rhythms of Egyptian mahraganat to shaabi wedding songs and dabke.

Initially trained as a jazz vocalist, Abdelwahed has seamlessly integrated this background into her productions, infusing them as well with Arab and African influences while addressing pressing social themes, reflecting a hopeful reclamation of musical diversity.
