Yas Meen’s goal is bringing Arabic sounds to as many clubs as possible, and she’s become an expert at turning expectations upside-down. Now based in Cairo, the Egyptian-born DJ spent a decade in New York City mixing the music of her upbringing with percussive bass to decolonise expectant ears. Blending beats from obscure 80s Egyptian pop over breaks and Jamaican soundsystem bass, bridging Gnawa music with jungle and techno – it’s just another day behind the decks for this selectress.
