What happens to music creation when your location is the definition of peripheral? In this panel discussion, the dynamics between Ireland and electronic music-making hubs around the world are explored, including Ireland’s post-colonial relationship with Britain and the sectarian context of Northern Ireland.

In the 1980s, nearly half a million young people were economic migrants from Ireland, but it meant the country had direct connections in many of the American and European cities where rave was beginning. Today, what can the Irish experience tell us about the relevance or otherwise of location in the post-digital landscape? Many Irish musicians and artists live abroad – however, the issue for many of them isn’t the periphery, but structural social problems which make Ireland unaffordable. The talk joins rapper Hazey Haze (Aaron Hazey); Laura O’Connell, aka DJ Lolz and one of the founders of the Gash Collective; and Dara Smith, aka Arad and one half of Lakker, in conversation with Niamh McShane.

Note: Kate Butler, previously listed as moderator of the talk, has withdrawn from the festival.
