Singeli music was born in the Mburahati slum of Dar es Salaam, the fastest growing city in the world. It was established at the turn of the century, when, after 40 years of building a socialist economy, Tanzania began implementing capitalist reforms. Singeli's creators come from the first generation that grew up in this new reality. The lyrics of their songs, attitudes, goals, and dreams reflect the image of this epoch – the clash of the altruism of bygone socialist times with the competitiveness of new reality, so clamant for the artists in pursuit of their careers.

Shot radically close to the community by filmmaker Jan Moss, the documentary Singeli Movement: Greed for Speed depicts an energetic music scene that attracts not only all ages but also genders. The one hour long documentary is in Swahili, with English subtitles. The film will not be livestreamed.

Following the screening is a panel discussion with some of singeli's prominent and pioneering voices. Jay Mitta is one of the core producers of Sisso Studios, the Dar es Salaam collective responsible for popularising singeli worldwide. Sisso affiliate Queen Asher is one of the few female singeli producers. Her mother Rehema Tajiri is a famed Tarraab and Singeli singer, who will grace Asher’s productions with unparalleled flow. The discussion will be streamed and accessible on CTM's YouTube channel.
