Goethe-Institut’s »Studio Quantum« will present a series of exploratory talks and groundbreaking performances around quantum technologies and music. A quantum computer deals with information encoded as quantum bits – or qubits. The qubit is to a quantum computer what a bit is to a digital one: it is a basic unit of information. In hardware, qubits live in the subatomic world. They are subject to the laws of quantum mechanics. Thus, qubits process information in fundamentally different and potentially more powerful ways than digital bits. Quantum computing is bound to open new and exciting opportunities for creative practices.
Programme
15:00 Welcome and Introduction of »Studio Quantum«
Johannes Ebert (Secretary General, Goethe-Institut), and Jan Rohlf (Artistic Director, CTM)
15:10 Introduction to Quantum Computing
Prof. Oliver Benson (Humboldt University) (15-20“), followed by discussion with Prof. Gesche Joost (University of Arts Berlin), moderated by Clara Hermann (Akademie der Künste, Berlin)
16:00 Quantum Computer Music. What the heck?
Eduardo Reck Miranda (ICCMR, University of Plymouth)
The development of new types of computers and the emergence of new approaches to making music walk hand in hand. This talk introduces the composer's research into harnessing quantum computers to create music. After a short introduction to quantum computing, Miranda will present the technology behind the pieces performed at the festival, followed by a discussion of how quantum technologies inspire and inform his creative practice.
17:30 Performance and Talk: Edy Fung and Muiredach O‘Riain
The renowned multidisciplinary artist Edy Fung will perform with Muiredach O’Riain, showcasing a work created during Fung’s time as a Studio Quantum Artist-in-Residence. The artists will then discuss their research and work with quantum technologies, electronic music, sound, and composition.
