Cevdet Erek has created the central piece of the exhibition, both literally and figuratively — the modular architectural and multichannel sound installation will be hosted in the ORTA 3 room of the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture, where »orta« stands for »center,« »middle,« or »environment« in Kazakh. Titled »Ortalık« — meaning »immediate surroundings« or »the world around one« in Turkish — Cevdet’s work ties together themes related to nomadic ways of life, from architecture, materials and methodologies related to states of flux, to how natural materials can transfer memory and history, especially in situations of migration. The installation will be activated by Cevdet through a special opening performance, after which it will provide resonant »islands« for other performances and discussions during the Trienniale.
The evening also features performances by Azadbek Bekchanov, as well as the work »Rite of Wind and Shadow« by Mieko Shiomi, performed by Nazira Omar and Tañsulpan Buraqayeva.
»Ortalık« is commissioned by the Korkut II Triennale, while Cevdet Erek’s opening performance is commissioned by CTM Festival.
