Dr. Carla J. Maier (she/her) is an independent researcher based in Berlin, working at the intersection of sound studies, postcolonial and cultural studies, music, and cultural anthropology.

Maier was recently Marie Curie research fellow (2018–2020) at the University of Copenhagen with her project »Travelling Sounds: A Sensory Ethnography of Sonic Artefacts in Postcolonial Europe.« She has published on modes of listening and sound practices in electronic dance music, sound art, afrofuturism, skateboarding, urban space, and around public monuments. She is author of the monograph »Transcultural Sound Practices: British Asian Dance Music as Cultural Transformation« (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020), and a member of the research laboratories, Critical Europeanization Studies and Migration, at Humboldt University Berlin. She has also sung and played guitar in punk & electro bands.
