Wahono takes over the Apotome generative microtonal music environment. The new work is created and performed in a single take using Apotome from his home studio in Jakarta.
Apotome is a browser-based transcultural generative music system focused on using microtonal tuning systems and their subsets (scales/modes). Resulting from artist and scholar Khyam Allami's current PhD research and his in-depth collaboration with Counterpoint, the creative studio run by Tero Parviainen and Samuel Diggins, the application is an effort to highlight the cultural asymmetries and biases inherent in modern music-making tools, alongside their interconnected web of musical, educational, cultural, social, and political ramifications.
Producer and sound artist Wahono will perform four pieces of music using notes and patterns generated by Apotome and Leimma. These compositions incorporate tuning systems of wind/reed instruments such as the serunai and saluang from the North / West Sumatra regions as well as the slompret from East Java. The tunings are explored outside of their common premises by being used to trigger varying modes of synthesis and processed acoustic instruments.
Wahono's takeover is produced by Wahono, shot and edited by Danang Prananda, mixed and mastered at Studio Oposisi Jakarta, Indonesia - January 2021.
