This discussion throws some light on recent projects by Lisa Rovner as well as by Frances Scott and Tom Richards to engage with the works, histories, and legacy of female electronic music pioneers, whose stories are still not known widely enough.

With her film Sisters with Transistors, Lisa Rovner has created a far-reaching portrait of pioneers from Eliane Radigue to Maryanne Amacher; women whose creativity has continued to influence the worlds of music, art, and film today, even as most people have never heard of them. In an upcoming film titled Wendy, as well as through a newly commissioned studio recording for transmediale and CTM, filmmaker Frances Scott and musician Tom Richards explore the legacy of pioneering synth composer and performer Wendy Carlos, perhaps most famously known for works such as Switched on Bach or her soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's 1971 dystopian masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange. Their work nods further to Daphne Oram's contributions to modern electronic music, through Richards' construction and use of the late artist's »Mini Oramics« machine, conceived as a follow up to her original Oramics Machine, but never built by Oram in her lifetime.

The talk explores ways of how to engage creatively with other artists' legacy - including how to approach the work of locating, researching, collecting, and telling impactful stories found at the margins. How might one enter and engage with the private lives and histories of artists, their families, or their trusted colleagues or communities, in a way that respects personal sensitivities while also allowing unheard stories and tributes to be told? Who are the people that take on the work of preserving the memory and legacy of undervalued creators, and what would happen if such groups and individuals did not step in to keep these histories from fading?

Rovner, Scott, and Richards meet with music journalist Lisa Blanning to exchange on their work process and share ideas on how to bring more histories that need telling to the fore.

Frances Scott and Tom Richard's participation in CTM is facillitated in collaboration with transmediale.
