Distributed Web of Care

Workshop with Taeyoon Choi

Distributed Web of Care arrives at CTM in the form of a workshop about alternative forms of sharing and creating music online. If we consider the internet as an environment – a digital space where limits are imposed upon access just as in physical environments – that reflects the society we inhabit, we come to realise discriminatory principles are embedded in the digital space through racist, sexist, classist, ageist, and ableist ideologies and exclusionary algorithms.

As this disparity unfolds in digital space, there is a shared responsibility to intervene in these systems of exclusion and to build a more equitable web of care. Creative expression, regardless of medium, plays an important role in shaping the future of the web. Distributed Web of Care @ CTM invites music and sound producers to think about their relationship to online platforms. What are the troubles of using Spotify, Soundcloud, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to promote their music and sound? What are alternative platforms and social networks that are open source, free, non-oppressive, and liberatory? In return, how will these alternative spaces inspire music and sound of the future? Who are those artists leading the way of imagining the future sound?
