Space as Audiovisual Sculpture, 2020

With »ixi,« artist/physicist Byrke Lou uses a set of hypergraphs currently employed by researchers in an attempt to find science’s holy grail, a unified »theory of everything« that explains the physics of our universe. Using the hypergraphs as an analogy to finding meaningful ways to design virtual environments, the artist opens up questions on how we conceptualise spaces – both real and virtual.

The experience begins inside the hypergraph space, where the spectator can float in all directions and experience a sound and light environment that gradually and continuously changes. Two shapes slowly morph from one into another, changing during the course of a day; it’s possible to revisit the artwork and discover different states at different times. Vocals, synths, or whispers and NASA space sounds resynthesized by an AI intersect with the visual experience. Whenever leaving the space, the visitor can look back and view the hypergraph’s evolving shape from the outside.

Created by Byrke Lou.

The AI voices and whispers are part of Byrke Lou's work complex »bayes.xi« and were mixed by Victor Van Vugt. The AI generating the vocals was trained and operated by Byrke Lou.
