Representatives of Tanzania’s Sisso Records come as ambassadors of new indefatigable, happy-hardcore-tinged sounds from the streets of Dar Es Salaam. This past June, Kampala-based enterprise Nyege Nyege Records, the same ones to host the project Nihiloxica, put out a compilation showcasing the output of Sisso Records. In this Berghain performance, Bampa Pana (one of Sisso’s main producers) will mix frantic beats with MC Makaveli spitting hi-velocity, rapid-fire chat on top.
Upcoming producer Perel creates a hybrid DJ/live set of electro-tinged house in support of her upcoming album on DFA, Panorama Bar resident Lakuti celebrates house fundamentals, and Batu lays down the bass-heavy sound and fractured rhythms that propelled his fledgling Timedance label into FACT’s top 10 best labels in 2016.
Laurel Halo will appear for a shapeshifting and uplifting DJ set. Founder of Berlin queer femme forward collective Room 4 Resistance, Luz will open the night with selections that range from funky tech to warm Chicago grooves to cold electro.
Timedance label boss Batu is the Bristol-based DJ and producer whose output seamlessly blends together UK bass and techno. His unique take on polyrhythmic, bassy techno can be heard on his most recent release for Hessle Audio, Marius.
LUZ is a DJ and the founder of Room 4 Resistance, a Berlin-based queer femme forward collective focused on community-building and creating safer space & visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. R4R runs parties at ://about blank, curates panels and workshops to promote women, gender queers, non-binaries, trans, black and POC artists. The initiative aims to share knowledge, explore the political dimensions of the dance floor, and create bridges between different communities.
For the past 15 years, the Tanzanian megalopolis of Dar Es Salaam has been home to one of the most exciting underground electronic music scenes in East Africa, and Sisso Records stands out as the city’s most prolific and creative studio. One of its long-time producers, Bampa Pana, appears at CTM 2018 together with MC Makaveli.
Soweto, South Africa native Lerato Khathi, or Lakuti, was influenced by her mother’s soul & funk music collection as well as her grandfather’s affinity for jazz. She developed an interest in early Chicago house and has since become a prominent house DJ.
Laurel Halo's productions are shapeshifting masses, moody and ecstatic, with flashes of rhythmic brilliance mediated by modal simplicity.
Perel immersed herself in Berlin’s club scene after relocating to the city from her native Saxony. Ever since, she has made a name for herself as an eclectic DJ and cunning producer alike.
