On invitation of the II Korkut Sonic Arts Triennale in Almaty, the Resynthesising the Traditional artistic lab will be held at the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture from 15–25 October 2025. Under the title »The Wind Howls« it will focus on aural traditions and the wind as both a powerful cultural symbol and physical element.
Six artistic fellows were selected via an international call: Aina Zhekebatyr aka Archeprototype (KZ), Airat Khaziev aka Şüräle (INT), Bruno Trochmann (BR), Jena Jang (KR/CZ), Mara Lalihatu aka XAKALELE (NL), and Rami Harrabi aka VIRUS2020 (TN). They have been working over the past week together with co-hosts Medina Bazarğali and Bilawa Respati, under the guiding metaphor of resynthesis – a processing method in computer music that analyzes sounds to extract their fundamental components. Through this lens, the lab aims to confront conservative views of culture as something frozen, solidified, and generally untouchable, thus resistant to any transformative practices.
Closing out the lab, the fellows will come together in a public roundtable discussion to share some of the processes, discussions, experiences, and questions that have been shared during the lab, together with lab curators and organisers.
Resynthesising the Traditional is an initiative by CTM Festival with Stas Shärifullá. It takes place in Almaty in partnership with the Korkut Sonic Arts Triennale, with kind support from Goethe-Institut Kazakhstan.
