Workshop with Thomas Ankersmit

Thomas Ankersmit is a musician based in Berlin, focusing on the Serge Modular analog synthesizer. Ankersmit’s music combines intricate sonic detail and raw electric textures with a very physical and spatial experience of sound. Acoustic phenomena such as infrasound and otoacoustic emissions (sounds emanating from inside the head, generated by the ears themselves) play an important role in his work, as does a deliberate, creative misuse of the equipment.
Developed 50 years ago by Serge Tcherepnin, the Serge Modular is widely considered one of the most powerful and versatile electronic instruments of the pre-digital era, and in recent years has seen a resurgence of interest among a new generation of artists. Working almost exclusively with the instrument for over 15 years, Ankersmit has a deep and broad knowledge of the Serge synthesizer. By enhancing the imperfections of the instrument, he finds ways to stretch the limits of what the versatile synth can produce. In this workshop, he will demonstrate his ways of working with the Serge Modular synthesizer, and in which participants are invited to join his experiments in patching and sounding.
